Grand vistas of neon-lit cities give way to shadowy industrial ruins as the silent warrior Yi stalks his prey through the procedural realms of New Kunlun. Developed by the Taiwan-based studio Red Candle Games, Nine Sols casts players as the legendary guardian awakened to unravel ancient secrets and face down the malevolent forces that have long conspired just beyond sight. Blending fast-paced action with thoughtful exploration, Nine Sols casts a spell that will delight fans of both Metroidvania adventures and the unforgiving combat of Soulslike classics.

At its core lies a rhythmic dance of steel against steel, as players must parry each blow with pixel-perfect timing. But Nine Sols envelops this core challenge in layer upon layer of discovery. As Yi pushes deeper into the hidden corners of each realm, he grows in strength through new abilities, weapons, and mystic arts.

This power serves both offense and exploration, as skills like a mighty leap or a glaive-like wind slash help reach new areas or cut down foes. Yet progress is never simple, as shortcuts and paths loop back on themselves in a web tying the world together. Players are free to wander or focus on objectives, but all will be drawn into the immersive world and its mysteries.

Through it all, the dazzling hand-drawn vision of New Kunlun steals the show. From verdant forests and azure shores to towering spires piercing a sky of swirling auroras, every vista seems worthy of framing. Characters too have life breathed into them, whether seen talking to Yi in story beats or meeting solely in honorable combat. It’s easy to see how Nine Sols weaves such enchantment that players become not simply observers but brave heroes in their own story within this fabled land. Both newcomers to the genre and veterans will find much to appreciate in Nine Sols’ fusion of fluid action and rich atmospheric storytelling.

Chronicles of Kunlun

The realm of Kunlun hides many secrets beneath its cyberpunk streets and verdant forests. Built upon the ruins of a once-great civilization, its people seek to uphold ancient traditions while industry reshapes their world. Yet all is not as it seems in this land of balance between progress and the past.

Our hero Yi walks these lands in search of answers. Long ago, he was a simple guardian, until a tragic event set him on a path of vengeance against the Nine Sols, mysterious beings whose power shapes Kunlun’s fate. Through dramatic cutscenes, we witness Yi’s turmoil and willingness to challenge even the gods themselves in his quest for retribution.

But Kunlun’s truths run deeper than any one story. Exploration reveals a rich tapestry woven throughout this bustling yet isolated dominion. In darkened alleyways lurk snippets of conversations, shedding light on communities both above and below the surface. Item descriptions and environmental details fill in the cultural, technological, and mystical aspects of a society balanced on the edge of change.

Most intriguing are the glimpses into Kunlun’s ancient past. Ruins hold carvings and hieroglyphs that, along with supernatural entities, hint at a precursor race now long gone. Synthesizing science and spiritualism, they appear to have ascended to a higher state now sought by modern Kunlunites. Their lingering influence continues to shape events, for good or ill, in a subtle weaving of fate.

With a deft hand, Nine Sols blends sci-fi cybernetics, gleaming spires, and speculative Taoism into a seamless whole. But more than providing an immersive playground, its interwoven storylines examine themes of duty, vengeance, fate, and humanity’s relationship with higher powers. In Kunlun, we find our own realities reflected in a technologically advanced yet spiritually questioning society on the brink of change. And through it all runs the thread that holds its mysteries: the saga of guardian Yi and his enduring search for truth amongst the Chronicles of Kunlun.

Battling Through an Ancient Realm

If I had to sum up Nine Sols in one word, it would be “parry.” This game centers around mastering a combat system that Sekiro itself would be proud of. You’ll spend your time learning attack patterns like a rhythm game and turning enemies’ strengths against them through perfectly-timed parries. It takes some adjusting at first, but it feels incredible once you’ve got the flow.

Nine Sols Review

Every fight puts your parry skills to the test. Enemies strike hard and fast, keeping you on your toes. Block just right, though, and you can turn the tables with a counterattack. I died plenty of times at first, as I learned. But with each attempt came a new understanding of an opponent’s moves. Before long, I could parry entire combos without getting touched, and it was hugely satisfying.

Customization ensures the action suits you. My build focuses on parrying through upgrades like longer parry windows. But you could emphasize mobility, magic, or raw offense instead. Different weapons even change your fighting style, from quick daggers to ranged archery. It’s cool to have options to truly make combat your own.

This individuality continues against Nine Sols’ impressive bosses. Each one seems designed to crush callow warriors like us at first. But through study, you learn to anticipate every punch, leap, and fireball. I’ll never forget finally toppling some hulking beasts after they’d defeated me endlessly. Moments like that are what these games are all about.

All in all, Nine Sols nails that “one more try” quality so many love about its influences. Battles are punishing yet fair, and improving yourself through practice is deeply rewarding. With so many ways to customize the action, it’s easy to find a playstyle that sings for you. So if you’re itching for intense combat with cinematic boss fights, this game’s system has you well covered.

Eyes and Ears in New Kunlun

The sights and sounds of Nine Sols make its world truly come alive. From the moment you start your journey, the lavish visuals draw you deep into its cyberpunk fantasy setting.

Nine Sols Review

Detailed character designs populated New Kunlun, each with their own style. You believed in the struggles and hopes within every NPC encountered. And bosses stood as epic showdowns, their intricate outfits and forms demanding your full attention.

Even common enemies felt distinctly crafted. Glimpsing a new variety across procedurally generated levels gave satisfaction, not just new challenges. Everything, down to tiny mice scurrying underfoot, bursts with living texture.

This care extended to locations. From sakura-dotted forests to rain-slicked alleys aglow with neon, each area immersed you in its own mood. Subtle touches like fluttering posters or sputtering lamps added richness. Levels acted less as simple stages and more like whole worlds to discover.

It’s no surprise that animation further enhances immersion. Fluid character moves blend offense, defense, and mobility with fluid grace. Even throughout frantic boss battles, the visuals remained pristine and impactful. Movement always flowed naturally from one beat to the next.

The audio complemented the stunning sights perfectly. Its cyberpunk soundtrack pulsed with crunchy electronic beats, fitting streets that fused modern technology with Eastern mysticism. New themes ushered in fresh wonders around each corner.

Yet impactful sound effects deserve the highest praise. Crunching bone on parries and cleaving flesh granted visceral fulfillment. Monstrous shrieks and roars boomed with immense presence. Even climbing ladders or swinging swords felt weighty and solid.

In Nine Sols, every sensory aspect holds up its end to make New Kunlun feel fully tangible. Both visual creativity and audio mastery yield an experience beyond mere pictures and tunes—a world that calls players to explore its every nook and cranny.

Getting to Grips with Nine Sols

I’ve got to say that I was pleasantly surprised by Nine Sols’s approachability. Given the comparisons to much harder games, I was expecting a real challenge right off the bat.

Nine Sols Review

But the developers have clearly put work into ensuring it’s accessible too. The combat, while complex, encourages learning rather than button-mashing. You’ve got room to ease into parry timing without getting overwhelmed.

It helps that there are options to suit different playstyles. Maybe precise parrying isn’t your thing—no problem; you can build your character out differently. Want to focus more on abilities or magic? Go for it.

There’s also plenty of checkpoints and the ability to re-challenge bosses. This makes practicing so much less punishing. You’re not facing a slog back through the level every time. Instead, you can just hone your skills.

It’s a nice balance. The game doesn’t hold your hand, but it doesn’t throw you in the deep end alone either. It sets you up to improve at your own pace.

This approach worked really well for making Nine Sols fun for players of all skill levels. More intense games can sometimes forget to be accessible, so it’s cool to see this one welcome both core and casual fans. It’s a great example of inclusivity done right.

Wandering the Wastelands

Nine Sols really pulls you in with its world. Everything just draws you in to explore further. Areas all interconnect so nicely that you’re constantly finding new paths.

Nine Sols Review

And it’s so rewarding when you take those paths too. Early on, you’ll spot spots you can’t reach. But then later you’ll get the ability and think, “Hey, I wonder…” Sure enough, you make your way back and uncover some sweet treasure or secret.

The skill tree plays into this perfectly. As you progress, you’ll earn points to spend on new skills. Maybe increase jumps to reach higher places. Or the ability to dash underwater. These open up even more areas to discover.

Nothing feels wasted, either. Every enemy felled and coin looted goes towards permanent stat boosts. Slowly but surely, your character becomes an unstoppable fighting force. You feel accomplished seeing yourself grow stronger with every new skill.

It all just loops together so well. Find a spot, get a skill, go back, and get rewarded. Rinse and repeat. I could wander those wastelands for hours, seeing what other mysteries they held. Nine Sols nailed the thrill of exploration and discovery.

Ever-Changing Adventures

Nine Sols keeps you coming back for more, thanks to the surprises it hides. New skills and abilities unlocked in one run might play out differently next time. Enemies you face and even whole areas can swap around.

Nine Sols Review

This randomization means the world feels fresh with each new adventure. You’ll discover alternate paths, secrets hidden in new nooks, and styles of play emerging from different builds. It’s like exploring a new land each time.

And that’s not mentioning the multiple endings. Your choices across multiple playthroughs will steer the story down different avenues. Want to see how else Yi’s journey could conclude? It’s time to start a fresh file.

If that’s not enough, New Game+ cranks everything up a notch. You’ll carry over your combat mastery and character progression to face deadlier foes. Those hard-won skills get tested like never before.

When you consider the dozen hours, at least, each run provides and the incentive to see more, Nine Sols truly gives you incredible value. All that replayability packed into a reasonable price? You definitely get your money’s worth.

Whether you’re curious to experience different pathways or crave an even mightier challenge, Nine Sols ensures your adventures never end. Its ever-changing world guarantees exciting surprises long after the first credits roll.
