Marvel Studios surprised fans at Disney’s D23 Expo over the weekend with a first look at their new “Marvel Zombies” series. The Disney+ show, expected to premiere in 2024, takes a darker tone than typical Marvel fare with its mature TV-MA rating.
Brian Andrews, an executive producer from Marvel’s popular “What If…?” animated series, presented footage from “Marvel Zombies” for attendees. The four-episode limited series continues the story from an episode of “What If…?” that imagined Marvel heroes turning into zombies.
The clip featured characters from 2021’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” including Shang-Chi, Katy, and Wenwu. Though their original actors have not been confirmed, the animated versions engaged in intense battles against zombies. In one scene, Shang-Chi is bitten but his father Wenwu saves him by gifting the powerful Ten Rings. This moment shows the emotional storytelling the series will explore.
Five years later, the world is utterly overrun by zombies. A car chase sequence showed Katy and Shang-Chi fleeing Skrull bikers, finding moments of levity singing along to music despite the grim situation.
“Marvel Zombies” allows for increased intensity and horror compared to other Marvel projects due its mature rating. This diversifies Disney+ content for broader audiences. The series expands the popular zombie concept from “What If…?,” offering deeper survival exploration in a world where heroes threaten mankind.
While no precise release date was announced, “Marvel Zombies” is planned for 2024 on Disney+. Fans can expect a grittier, more intense Marvel experience pushing boundaries compared to past projects.
