Meta Akkus’ heartwarming 2022 film Make a Wish tells the paralleled journeys of two young boys navigating change. Kaan lives happily in rural Turkey until learning of his impending move.

On his birthday, his parents read him a gift book about Berke’s daily challenges with school bullying. Berke finds solace in his grandfather’s wisdom about facing obstacles through believing in oneself.

The stories beautifully weave together as each boy discovers his inner strength. While frightened by his new beginnings, Kaan takes hope from Berke’s growing courage against his tormentor.

In turn, Berke’s magic turtle brings temporary fixes until he comprehends true confidence comes from within. Their gentle adventures remind us that however much life varies, understanding and community help us meet each test.

The Story Within Kaan’s Story

Living a carefree life by the rolling hills and verdant countryside of rural Turkey, young Kaan’s world seemed a place of endless fun and adventure. He spent sunny days exploring riverbanks and meadows with his band of neighbors, with not a worry beyond the next game. But tranquility shattered when his parents delivered earth-changing news—the family must move their lives far away to the sprawling metropolis of Istanbul.

Kaan felt suddenly adrift, overwhelmed by the thought of leaving all that was familiar. How could he endure life in a loud, crowded city without his valley friends and village ways? A pall was cast over even his birthday celebrations. Until, that is, a special gift arrived offering solace—a thick storybook handed down from his aunt.

Inside, vivid illustrations brought to life the tale of another country boy, Berke, living each school day tormented by a playground bully’s hurtful taunts and tricks. Alone with his worries, Berke confided in his wise grandfather. And through their talks by the orchard, Berke discovered that believing in one’s inner strength could help conquer any challenge.

As night fell and a lamp was lit, Kaan sat enraptured as his parents read these magical adventures. The magic of the story began working its soothing charm. Though scared to leave what he knew for unknown streets and people, Kaan found hope in Berke’s rising courage to face his daily menace. Perhaps even big adjustments need not spell lost happiness or the end of boyish fun?

As Berke’s confidence in himself grew despite his troubles, Kaan started understanding that whatever life brings one’s way, there is always a path forward if you make a wish from the heart. The story within his book gave him strength to see beyond today’s fears and sorrows, seeing tomorrow as a chance for new beginnings instead of endings.

Berke’s Journey of Self-Discovery (expanded)

For too long, young Berke had suffered under the shadow of Hasan’s cruelty. Each school day brought fresh taunts and tricks from the bully and his gang, leaving Berke shrinking with fear and doubt. He took to walking lonely hours in the gardens, seeking calm amongst the blossoms. It was there that his dear grandfather noticed the sadness in his eyes.

Make a Wish Review

With gentle patience, the wise elder listened as Berke poured out his pains. Over many afternoons amid the buzz of honeybees, Berke learned life’s deepest lessons from his grandfather’s soft words. He learned of the inner magic that sleeps in all souls, just waiting to be awakened by hope, courage, and believing in oneself above any bully’s judgment. These lessons planted seeds that would soon bloom.

One morning, while playing by the shore, Berke spied a gift from the sea foaming ashore—a beautiful box turtle, its olive shell adorned with stars. He named her Ninja for her stealthy ways. But this was no ordinary pet. Each wish Berke made to the enchanted creature came miraculously true. Popularity, treasures, charm—his confidence swelled as the bullying faded.

Yet easy as it was to bend others to his every whim, Berke found it harder to remember those first friends who saw beyond his fears. New friends flocked only to his side when gifts were given; old friends stayed for who he was within. As his power grew, so did his neglect for the meaningful things in life. When at last Ninja disappeared, Berke hit his lowest.

It was only then, in lonely hours among the rustling trees and stars, that he recalled his grandfather’s deepest lessons. And in that moment came a glorious revelation: the true magic and power to conquer all hardships lie not outside but inside each soul.

Life’s Lessons

A core message within Make A Wish centers around having faith in oneself, regardless of difficulties that may arise. Both Kaan and Berke face significant challenges—moving homes, overcoming bullying. Yet through support from others, each boy learns to believe in his own strengths.

Make a Wish Review

A subtle theme involves changing social circles as children grow. When Berke gains popularity, he leaves behind longtime friends. This realistic depiction highlights how relationships evolve alongside personal development. Appreciating all people, not just the “cool kids,”  remains important.

Power without responsibility holds little meaning. As Berke’s magic turtle grants wishes, responsibilities follow. Great abilities require using them to help others, not just oneself. Meanwhile, Kaan discovers fulfilling one desire may disregard another’s needs.

Generational themes also emerge. Where tradition gave power mostly to boys, changing attitudes empower all genders. Within respectful relationships like Kaan’s parents, each voice matters. Though problems remain, messages offer hope that with open-hearted inclusion, societies continue advancing.

Most importantly, small good deeds make the greatest difference. Whether standing up to a bully, granting a wish, or accepting life’s turbulence with grace, these acts shift perspectives for the better. Through faith in each other as in oneself, communities become stronger by lifting each other in difficult times.

In the end, facing life’s lessons with courage, love, and hope creates positive change, as this film so beautifully illustrates. Its themes will resonate for years to come.

Characters With Heart

At the story’s center is Kaan, a lively boy enjoying childhood in the Turkish countryside. Though still young, Kaan carries a spark that shows in his play. He treasures time with family in the place he calls home. Yet life presents unexpected change when news comes of a planned move, shattering Kaan’s sense of security. Now he must find a way to accept what’s beyond his control.

Make a Wish Review

Another facing challenge is Berke, whom readers meet through Kaan’s gift. Timid at first, Berke endures bullying Hasan’s cruel taunts. But a talk with his grandfather opens Berke’s eyes, and a magic turtle’s aid lifts his spirits. Through facing fears, Berke taps an inner courage that grows stronger each day. His journey cultivates the confidence to bring out his true self.

As for villain Hasan, his action stems from asserting dominance through others’ submission. Bereft of empathy, he knows only power through instilling fright. Yet one senses complexity beneath his scowl, a chance perhaps for understanding his pains and extending compassion.

Secondary characters add nuance, like Kaan’s parents navigating a teenager’s struggles or Berke’s grandad strengthening with wisdom. Their care and advice influence our heroes during life’s uncertainties.

These characters feel authentic in their layers. Their relatable highs and lows resonate across cultures, as does discovering one’s place in the world. Make A Wish brings them to life with heart so their life lessons remain with viewers for years to come.

Crafting the Visual Experience

Akkus displayed masterful direction in using imagery to immerse viewers. Sweeping landscape shots of countryside and skyline establish a tranquil yet lively world. We feel Kaan’s joy simply by seeing wind rush wheat fields or boats dart across glistening water. These landscapes capture lives deeply connected to nature.

Make a Wish Review

Her vision guides us through life’s gentle yet profound lessons. With care, Akkus reveals challenges both external and internal each boy faces. From storytelling structure to nuanced performances, young audiences intuitively grasp themes of courage, empathy, and resilience.

Naturalism shines through her leading actors. We believe in Kaan’s beaming smiles and Berke’s timid glances because they reflect childhood’s earnest complexity. Never do characters feel like constructs—their humanity draws us in.

Regrettably, swelling music occasionally overwhelms tender scenes between family. Where visuals and dialogue delicately convey emotion, overdramatic orchestra drowns out subtlety. Less would strengthen empathy for difficulties children overcome through love, not melodrama.

Make A Wish proves that rich themes reach widests through sparing, impactful presentation. In Akkus’ capable directorial hands, intricate stories beautifully spread hope nationwide. Perhaps future projects may find harmony-enhancing emotion through sound as skillfully as sight. Regardless, her cinematic gift inspires all seeking stories with heart.

Timeless Tales of Hope

Through Meta Akkus’ masterful direction, vivid landscapes, and talented young leads, vivid journeys of Kaan and Berke emerged. Both face daunting challenges, yet through the support of caring communities, find courage within to push onwards.

Their stories together reinforce the timeless message—even in life’s bleakest moments, faith and hope carry one forward. Make A Wish reminds us that uncertainty comes to all, but through compassion for ourselves and others, brighter days can be found.

It’s a heartwarming tale sure to enchant viewers of any age. Generations to come will bond over its charming escapades and quietly powerful messages. Akkus has crafted a reminder of life’s beauty through solidarity among people.

I recommend Make a Wish for its ability to lift spirits. As its characters show, so long as communities support each other in times of need, human resilience and goodness will always triumph over adversity. In this way, Akkus’ creation is a light to guide all facing challenges, young or old, with hope that brighter tomorrows come.
