In a big milestone for regional cinema, Qatar’s Katara Studios has launched a new slate of four films aimed at promoting Arab storytelling on a worldwide scale. The reveal occurred at the famous Red Sea Film Festival, highlighting the studio’s commitment to fostering pan-Arab voices and creating content with international appeal.
The program includes a wide range of genres, from biographical films to fantasy adventures, and represents a significant investment in the region’s creative potential.
Sakhr, a biopic about Mohammed Al-Sharekh, is the top film on the slate. He was a pioneering Kuwaiti technologist who invented the world’s first Arabic-language operating system. This film recognizes his contributions to technological innovation in the Arab world.
A.J. Al Thani, a promising Qatari director, will direct Sari & Amira, a fantasy epic. The film is set in the spectacular settings of Wadi Sakheema. It follows two outlaws as they confront mythical animals in search of legendary wealth. The cast features Alex Uloom and Hala Al Turk, who provide a mix of action and romance.
The third film, Sa3oud Wainah, is a mystery thriller that marks an important milestone in Qatari commercial cinema. The film, starring Mishal Al Dosari, portrays the fascinating story of two brothers who seek to reproduce a magic performance, only to have unexpected repercussions.
The slate is completed by Anne Everlasting, a documentary about Anne Lorimor, who, at the age of 89, became the oldest person to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. The film delves into her experience, resilience, and foundation’s purpose to inspire others.
“Katara Studios aims to ignite pan-Arab creativity and foster cross-cultural connections,” stated Hussein Fakhri, Katara Studios’ Chief Creative Officer. “With this slate, we seek to present stories that resonate globally.”
This announcement demonstrates Katara Studios’ growing reputation for content creation. The company has previously produced acclaimed projects, such as the sci-fi series Medinah for Starzplay and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 ceremonies.
This expansion is more than just a new slate of films; it reflects a larger ambition to elevate Arab storytelling and provide nuanced narratives that resonate with people worldwide.
