On Tuesday, Nicole Kidman, who won an Oscar, wowed the crowd at the National Board of Review Gala in New York City. She acted out a famous scene from her most recent movie, “Babygirl,” by drinking a whole glass of milk on stage during her award speech for Best Actress.
The 57-year-old actress raised her glass and said, “I’m going to raise a glass of milk to all the baby girls in the room.” She said, “Good girl,” which was meant to be funny. In “Babygirl,” Romy, her character, a tech CEO, shares a glass of milk with Samuel, a young intern played by Harris Dickinson. This scene felt a lot like that.
Halina Reijn, the movie’s director, told IndieWire that this scene was based on a real-life meeting she had with a younger actor, which she called “one of the most arousing moments” of her life.
Kidman has talked about how difficult her part in “Babygirl” was in interviews. She said she felt excited and scared when she first read the story. “It got me excited.” I was thrilled. “First, the scenes and things excited me, and then they scared me,” she said. Kidman also talked about how the movie changes how power usually works between characters. “One minute I’m the dad, the next he is,” “That’s what I love about how she shows the different generations,” she said.
Many people have strong opinions about the movie. Some say the whole thing might be a dream scene. Regarding these different interpretations, Kidman said, “I’m always hesitant to answer those things because audiences should always be able to figure out what they want from it.”
Kidman talked about the creative process and the lessons she learned from working with the famous director Stanley Kubrick. When reading lines, she stressed how important first impressions are. “The first read is the only thing that matters.” “The answer will be slightly different after that,” she remembered.
Even though Kidman has had a very successful career, she is still humble about it. When told how much she had changed movies, she said, “It’s not me.” Without the person who wrote, directed, or played the opposite role of you, it’s just words. The group is what makes it possible.
Kidman says the movie Babygirl should be seen “alone,” is now in theaters.
