James Cameron has revealed that Avatar: Fire and Ash, the upcoming third installment in the Avatar franchise, will surpass the runtime of The Way of Water, which ran for three hours and 12 minutes. The director explained that an overflow of ideas during production led to the decision to shift part of the story to the next film.
“In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie two,” Cameron told Empire magazine. “The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’” As a result, he confirmed, “movie three will actually be a little bit longer than movie two.”
Cameron first introduced the title Fire and Ash at D23 in August 2024. While no footage was shown at the time, concept art offered glimpses of new elements, including massive airships, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) soaring on a banshee, and a preview of the Ash People, a new Na’vi tribe seen gathered around a fire pit.
“You’ll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,” Cameron said during the event. “It’s an intense adventure and a spectacle, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes.”
Returning cast members include Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, and Dileep Rao. The film will also introduce Oona Chaplin as the leader of the Ash People and David Thewlis in an undisclosed role.
Co-writer Amanda Silver explained the decision to separate Fire and Ash from The Way of Water, emphasizing the importance of allowing characters to develop. “The characters needed to breathe,” Silver said. “These movies are much more than just forward-moving plot and visual spectacle. I mean, these are real characters.”

While Cameron has not shared specific plot details, he previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the film is “really cool” and assured fans they would love it. When asked if he still intends to direct Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, he responded, “Absolutely. I mean, they’re going to have to stop me. I got plenty of energy, love doing what I’m doing. Why would I not?” He added that both scripts are completed and ready for production.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is set for release on December 19, 2025, with Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 slated for December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031, respectively.
