Fans Divided, Box Office Booms After Gunn’s Krypton Reveal

Director defends the film’s polarising hologram twist as box‑office returns and IMAX numbers soar.

James Gunn has told viewers hoping the controversial Krypton twist in his new “Superman” film will be walked back that they are “shit out of luck,” ending weeks of speculation about a possible edit for future releases. The director explained that changing the reveal would “undo the entire emotional arc of the movie.”

Mid‑film, a restored hologram shows Jor‑El and Lara Lor‑Van instructing their infant son to conquer Earth and repopulate Krypton’s bloodline, reversing their long‑standing on‑screen image as self‑sacrificing benefactors. Lex Luthor uses the footage to rally public opinion against Superman, forcing Clark Kent to question whether his benevolence is inherited or chosen.

Hashtags such as #SecretHarem spread quickly as fans theorised the message might be fabricated or retconned. Gunn dismissed those theories, likening the Kryptonians’ view of humanity to how people regard sea turtles and insisting the story’s point is that Clark defines morality for himself.

Veteran comics writer Mark Waid defended the film, noting that recent storylines including “Flashpoint Beyond” also depict Krypton as elitist and exploitative. Industry commentators add that the darker back‑story primes the franchise for Brainiac, whose symbols appear in the post‑credit stinger.

The film rolled out day‑and‑date in fifteen international markets, a strategy designed to blunt spoilers and maximise word‑of‑mouth. Some pundits have attacked the movie as “super‑woke,” but Gunn counters that its central theme is simple kindness rather than politics.

Box‑office numbers suggest the debate is boosting interest: the picture has earned about $273 million worldwide since opening on 11 July, leading domestic charts for two consecutive weekends. IMAX screens accounted for roughly 15 percent of the domestic debut, underscoring appetite for large‑format spectacle, and have delivered $30.4 million globally to date.

Warner Bros. has yet to announce a follow‑up, but Gunn—already outlining Chapter Two of the DC universe—signals that any continuation will embrace rather than erase the disputed hologram.
