Kirsten Dunst says she would gladly sign on for a sequel to this year’s box-office smash A Minecraft Movie, telling a recent magazine profile that her two young sons loved the film and joking that she would like to “make a movie where I don’t lose money.”
Her comments arrive as the first film’s financial performance strengthens the case for another installment: the April release has earned about $954 million worldwide, including roughly $424 million in the US and Canada, placing it among 2025’s top performers after a record-setting opening for a video game adaptation. Studio leaders have publicly signaled a follow-up is on deck, saying a new chapter is expected “imminently,” though formal announcements on creative team or casting have not been made.
Dunst, 43, has balanced franchise work and prestige dramas across her career and recently spoke about being more pragmatic in role choices. In the same interview, she referenced past pay disparities and described a desire to take part in something her children can enjoy—and that could be a safer financial bet than some of her recent indie titles. A Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess and led by Jason Momoa and Jack Black, became a cultural flashpoint with meme-fueled “rowdy” screenings and robust family turnout that helped power its theatrical run.
The timeline for a sequel remains fluid. Trade chatter and industry trackers have pointed to early development moves following the first film’s performance, but key elements such as plot, returning cast, and whether Hess will be back have not been detailed.
For Dunst, any participation would likely slot around a busy slate that includes the crime drama Roofman, dated for October 10, 2025, along with additional projects she has recently discussed. The first film’s commercial upside, wide four-quadrant appeal, and strong brand recognition give the studio ample incentive to fast-track plans; Dunst’s public interest adds a recognizable name to the pool of potential additions should the sequel firm up.
