Christopher Landon says he walked away from Scream 7 “about a week” after Melissa Barrera was dismissed in November 2023, adding that the script had been built around her character and that without her “there was no movie.” He also recounts receiving death threats amid the fallout, calling the experience painful.
Barrera’s removal followed social media posts criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza; she later said she condemns antisemitism and Islamophobia and would continue to speak out. Landon’s account arrives as the franchise’s next chapter takes firmer shape under original writer Kevin Williamson, who has taken over directing duties and refocused the film around Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott.
The production company behind the series previously said it has zero tolerance for hate speech, while Barrera rejected the suggestion that her posts were bigoted. Jenna Ortega departed the project days after Barrera’s exit; although early trade coverage tied her decision to scheduling, Ortega later said the shake-up around her co-star and the change in the creative team made returning feel wrong for her at that moment.
With the franchise reoriented, the upcoming film shifts focus to Sidney’s family, including a daughter played by Isabel May and a husband portrayed by Joel McHale. Filming began in Atlanta in January 2025, and the studio has set a February 27, 2026 theatrical release.
In recent weeks, cast members have reflected on the tumult that followed the 2023 upheaval and on the decision to return to a Sidney-centered story, a move that aligns the sequel more closely with the series’ original lineage under Williamson. Landon, for his part, says he had no intention of making a different version of the movie once the lead his script was built around was gone.
