Jeff Hiller won his first Primetime Emmy on Sunday, taking outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for his performance as Joel on HBO’s Somebody Somewhere at the 77th ceremony in Los Angeles. He prevailed over fellow nominees Bowen Yang, Colman Domingo, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Harrison Ford, Ike Barinholtz and Michael Urie.
“I feel like I’m going to cry,” Hiller said onstage, joking that after 25 years of trying to be an actor, “the world [said], ‘Maybe computers.’” He thanked “my sweet husband and my family for never laughing at me,” and singled out series lead Bridget Everett for changing his life.
The result was read as one of the night’s surprises, with Hiller topping a field that included Moss-Bachrach, a back-to-back winner in 2023 and 2024, and Ford, who earned his first Emmy nomination this year for Shrinking.
Elsewhere in comedy, Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder were honored for Hacks, while Seth Rogen won lead actor for The Studio; drama acting prizes included Britt Lower and Tramell Tillman for Severance.
Hiller’s win arrives months after Somebody Somewhere concluded its third and final season in December 2024, capping a run praised for its intimate portrait of friendship in small-town Kansas.
The actor, 49, has spoken about the unlikely path to this moment—chronicled in his June 10 memoir, Actress of a Certain Age: My Twenty-Year Trail to Overnight Success—while expressing gratitude to fans who found the show after its finale.
