Hildur Guðnadóttir scores Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride with a pulse of romance and rebellion

The Oscar-winning composer outlines a propulsive, romantic musical design for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s reimagining of the Bride of Frankenstein, starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale.

Hildur Guðnadóttir said Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride will be driven by a volatile mix of romance and edge, describing her score as keyed to the film’s unruly energy and tender core. The Oscar-winning composer, who previously worked on Joker and Chernobyl, discussed writing to abrupt shifts in tone and pacing as the footage leans into danger, desire, and a furious sense of momentum. She boarded the project earlier this year, taking over from a previously attached composer, and has been shaping themes around the title character’s awakening and the story’s 1930s Chicago setting.

Gyllenhaal’s film reimagines the Bride of Frankenstein mythology as a punk-inflected love story. Christian Bale plays Frankenstein, who seeks out Dr. Euphronious to create a companion; Jessie Buckley’s revived woman becomes the Bride, sparking a rebellious movement alongside a combustible relationship. Recent marketing highlights a barrage of pursuit, dance, and mob scenes and frames the central couple as outlaw lovers, signaling an emphasis on velocity and catharsis that dovetails with Guðnadóttir’s approach. The cast also includes Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz, with a U.S. theatrical release set for March 6, 2026.

Guðnadóttir’s comments come as the film’s visual identity has come into sharper focus, with cinematography led by Lawrence Sher and the production positioning the feature as a big-canvas studio rollout. Her involvement adds another high-profile studio title to a recent run that has ranged from brooding character studies to large-scale genre pieces, and signals the director’s intent to tether the movie’s “radical” streak to a musical language capable of balancing intimacy with shock. The premise—Frankenstein and his Bride as catalysts for social unrest—gives the composer room to oscillate between lyrical motifs and percussive, forward-driving cues, a palette that aligns with the trailer’s teasing of murder, possession, and a movement gathering in the bride’s name.
