Lindsay Lohan is giving Maggie Simpson a rare speaking voice in Sunday’s episode of The Simpsons, a flash-forward installment titled “Parahormonal Activity” airing Dec. 14 on Fox at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT. Lohan announced the guest spot on Instagram, calling it “a dream come true,” and shared a teaser in which an older Bart insists he should drive to school. Maggie, usually silent, breaks in with a plea: “Please don’t let Bart drive! It’s too scary!”
The scene tees up a near-future version of the family, with the network’s episode description framing Marge as strained by teenage Bart and Lisa while facing a “major life change,” leaving Homer positioned as “the last sane person in the house.” The teaser leans into that mood, pairing heightened family anxiety with the shock of hearing Maggie speak at length.
Maggie’s silence has long been part of the show’s comic grammar, with Nancy Cartwright typically supplying her nonverbal sounds. The series has bent that rule in special cases—dreams, alternate realities and flash-forwards—by letting guest performers voice a line or two. Past speaking voices for Maggie have included Elizabeth Taylor, Jodie Foster, Viola Davis and James Earl Jones, with Taylor delivering Maggie’s famous “daddy” moment in “Lisa’s First Word.”
The Lohan cameo also fits a creative approach the writers have discussed publicly: treating Springfield’s timeline as flexible. In a recent online Q&A, writer-producers Jeff Westbrook and Ryan Koh said the show can “jump around in time,” and Koh pointed to stories built around shifting ages and life stages, including an episode centered on menopause and puberty.
Online reaction has tracked along familiar lines for a long-running franchise: some viewers welcome a high-profile guest turn and the novelty of a talkative Maggie, while others argue the show’s best surprises land when they come from the regular ensemble rather than stunt casting. Fox will find out quickly which impulse wins out when the episode hits air.
