Travel television usually depends on a host who can make unfamiliar places feel welcoming. Conan O’Brien Must Go Season 3 takes the opposite route: it sends a 6’4” comedian with a bright red target painted on himself into situations where he is usually the least prepared person in the room. The joke works because Conan O’Brien understands the assignment. He is not there to appear worldly. He is there to look ridiculous while giving everyone around him a chance to shine.

The third season sends Conan to India, the Netherlands, Morocco, and the Philippines after meeting fans through Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. The structure remains familiar, with each episode built around a mixture of local exploration, fan visits, strange challenges, and elaborate comedy pieces. The difference comes from how often the real moments overpower the planned ones.

Conan’s greatest skill has always been commitment. A joke that should have ended thirty seconds ago becomes a five-minute performance because he refuses to admit defeat. That instinct has carried him from late-night television to international specials, and this series continues to prove that his greatest comedic tool is the willingness to make himself look absurd. Season 3 works because the world refuses to let Conan control the joke.

When Conan Meets People Who Fight Back

The strongest episodes understand that Conan does not need to manufacture chaos. He only needs to walk into a room and wait. India provides the clearest example. The premiere has plenty of traditional Conan energy, including his attempt to play cricket while wearing formal cricket whites and confusing young players who seem unsure what to do with this extremely tall American. Yet the episode finds its real rhythm during his visit with Rusty, a fan with spinal muscular atrophy, and Rusty’s family.

The segment could have been a simple celebrity surprise. Instead, the family immediately creates its own comedic atmosphere. Rusty’s initial shock gives way to a conversation where everyone participates, and Conan becomes part of the family’s strange, funny rhythm rather than the person directing the scene. His parents bring their own unpredictable energy, turning the visit into something warmer and funnier than a scripted setup could create.

The Netherlands finds a different kind of partner in Mika, a model who helps Conan attempt a transformation into a fashion icon. The joke lands because Conan supplies the insecurity and Mika supplies the honesty. When Conan lists his perceived flaws, from his appearance to his unusual physical features, the comedy comes from how willingly he hands over ammunition. The best people on Conan O’Brien Must Go understand that the easiest way to make Conan funny is to refuse his invitation to become the straight man.

Sona Movsesian Steals the Desert

The Morocco episode gives the season its most entertaining relationship dynamic through Conan’s longtime assistant Sona Movsesian. Their chemistry comes from years of familiarity, which means Sona has already seen every trick Conan has available.

Conan O’Brien Must Go Season 3 Review

The pair’s trip feels less like a traditional travel segment and more like two siblings forced to share a vacation. Conan attempts to create ridiculous situations, and Sona responds with the exhausted confidence of someone who has survived every previous version of this routine.

Their scenes work because the power balance keeps shifting. Conan may be the celebrity host, yet Sona often controls the moment simply by refusing to react the way he expects. When she discusses her interests while Conan slowly walks away from the conversation, the comedy comes from the timing. The camera understands that the funniest choice is allowing the silence to continue.

The Sahara sequence follows the same pattern. Conan being buried in the sand is funny because the image itself is ridiculous, but the real joke comes from the fact that Sona is equally willing to make his experience uncomfortable.

The series has experimented with memorable Conan partnerships before, but Sona brings something different. She does not need to be confused by Conan. She knows exactly what he is doing and chooses to make his life harder anyway. Few travel companions would understand the assignment this well.

The Bits That Run Past Their Expiration Date

The challenge with a comedian as experienced as Conan is that everyone knows he can create a joke from almost anything. That makes the moments where the series pushes too hard stand out. Season 3 has several elaborate sketches that feel like they are competing with the real encounters rather than supporting them. The India episode includes an extended monkey-related parody involving a robotic mascot. The idea fits Conan’s absurdist style, but the segment stretches long enough that the joke starts waiting for itself to end.

The episode also includes Conan helping aspiring talk-show host Nikhil create his own program. There are funny moments, especially when Conan’s own habits become the subject, but the segment relies heavily on Conan carrying the entire performance.

The Netherlands episode faces a similar issue with its international court sketch, which revisits supposed crimes from Conan’s previous travels. The concept produces laughs, yet it feels less exciting than simply watching Conan interact with people in front of him. A joke about Conan being ridiculous is usually strongest when reality has already provided the evidence.

The season does improve its pacing compared with earlier installments. Conversations have more room to breathe, and episodes often allow a moment to develop instead of racing toward the next punchline. The editing knows when to stay with a reaction, which matters in comedy because the pause before a joke can be funnier than the joke itself. Sometimes the funniest cut is the one the editor refuses to make.

A Travel Series Built Around Being the Tourist

The four destinations each offer different flavors of Conan’s style. The Philippines episode uses local experiences, including a bellhop challenge and a candy factory visit, as opportunities for physical comedy. A fake mustache during a procedural parody becomes funny because Conan treats a tiny inconvenience like a dramatic crisis.

The Netherlands episode makes strong use of its location, moving through King’s Day celebrations, bicycles, tulip fields, and Dutch art history. Conan’s attempt to become Vincent van Gogh during a museum visit works because he commits to the character long after everyone else has moved on.

Morocco provides the most visually distinctive backdrop, taking Conan from Marrakech to the Sahara while exploring tea traditions, markets, Amazigh culture, and the search for argan oil connected to Sona’s interests. These sequences work when the location and comedy share the same space. The scenery matters, but the people within it remain the reason to keep watching.

The series has a strange position in modern television. It looks like a travel program, but it behaves like an extended remote segment from late-night television. Streaming has produced countless celebrity exploration series, many built around access and prestige. Conan’s appeal comes from surrendering both. He travels the world and somehow remains the person least equipped to handle it.

Conan’s Greatest Achievement Is Losing the Room

Three seasons in, Conan O’Brien Must Go has settled into a rhythm that depends on one simple idea: Conan is funniest when he stops trying to prove he is funny. The series occasionally gets distracted by oversized sketches and concepts that cannot match the unpredictability of real conversations.

Yet when Conan meets someone who understands his strange energy, the result feels effortless. Rusty’s family, Mika, Sona, and the many strangers who refuse to follow Conan’s expected script create the moments that stay behind. That balance keeps the series alive. Conan brings the chaos, but everyone else decides where it goes. The funniest person in every country remains the one who just arrived.

Conan O’Brien Must Go is a travel comedy series that premiered its third season on August 21, 2026, on HBO and Max. The show follows comedian Conan O’Brien as he visits international destinations, meeting local fans and diving into unique cultures.

The Review

Conan O’Brien Must Go Season 3

8 Score

Conan O’Brien Must Go Season 3 understands that Conan’s greatest travel companion is chaos itself. The season stumbles when it stretches prepared sketches beyond their natural lifespan, yet the strongest episodes trust spontaneous encounters, sharp editing, and Conan’s unmatched willingness to become the joke. The result is a travel series where the destinations matter, but the unpredictable humans he meets matter more.

PROS

  • Conan’s fearless self-deprecation
  • Genuine fan encounters
  • Strong international chemistry
  • Improved pacing

CONS

  • Overlong scripted bits
