Stephen Root, 74, Becomes Oldest Emmy Winner in His Category

The veteran character actor beat out Harrison Ford to win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, becoming the oldest performer to claim the category.

Stephen Root has spent nearly four decades on television without ever quite becoming a household name, even as he built one of the industry’s most recognizable character-actor resumes. On Monday night, at 74, he finally took home an Emmy, winning Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Wyck Crawford in Apple TV’s “Widow’s Bay” — and in doing so, broke Henry Winkler’s record as the oldest actor to claim the category.

Sofía Vergara presented the award, and Root, visibly stunned, told the crowd he was thrilled and delighted before quickly redirecting credit to the people around him. He praised series creator Katie Dippold and director Hiro Murai for guiding the cast through ten strong episodes, then turned to castmates Matthew Rhys and Kate O’Flynn, calling their chemistry together one of the finest things television has produced this century. He closed by thanking the show’s full ensemble for the attention their freshman season had drawn.

Root also singled out one of his defeated competitors. Harrison Ford had entered the night considered a serious threat for his turn on “Shrinking,” and Root addressed him directly from the podium, thanking him for decades of accomplished work and noting that his own son had called to remind him he was up against a Hollywood legend. Speaking to reporters afterward, Root said hearing his name announced felt almost like an error, and added that the trophy would go in his office beside a Golden Globe once won by his father-in-law, television producer Norman Rosemont.

The win capped a long, quiet run in the business for an actor known for eccentric supporting turns on “NewsRadio,” “King of the Hill,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Barry,” where he earned his only prior nomination in 2019. On “Widow’s Bay,” Root plays a local outsider dismissed as a crank for insisting the town’s supernatural curses were real, a premise that gains urgency once the mayor, played by Rhys, is forced to take him seriously.

The show’s night stretched far beyond Root’s category. “Widow’s Bay” set a single-season record for a comedy series with fourteen total wins, sweeping every category in which it competed and adding to eight prizes already claimed at the Creative Arts ceremony the week before, cementing its freshman season as the story of the night.
