Final Fantasy XVI, the latest installment in the Square Enix franchise, will have a traditional design with individual levels, breaking away from the trend of open world games seen in other franchises like the previous Final Fantasy XV.
According to an interview with the game’s director, Hiroshi Takai, the decision was made in order to manage the pace of the adventure throughout the game’s purely narrative story.
Takai also discussed the game’s new combat system, which seems to be closer to the hack and slash genre than to the RPG roots of the series.
The combat system is somewhat inspired by the profession system in Final Fantasy V, but details are yet to be revealed by Square Enix.
With its darker and more mature plot than previous Final Fantasy installments, Final Fantasy XVI aims to be a somewhat transgressive game for the franchise.
And while it won’t be an open world game, fans can still look forward to a traditional Final Fantasy experience when the game launches on June 22 exclusively for PS5. While a PC release is planned for the future, the game’s exclusivity leaves out Xbox consoles indefinitely.
