Brought to life by the creators of the critically acclaimed The Witcher 3 and boasting participation from Hollywood icon Keanu Reeves, the anticipation for Cyberpunk 2077 was immense. The gaming world eagerly awaited what was thought to be one of the most promising games of the decade.
Unfortunately, the game’s launch was far from smooth, arguably becoming one of the most disastrous releases in recent memory. Now, despite its substantial improvements over the last three years, Cyberpunk 2077 has found a spot in New York’s Museum of Failure, marking its turbulent inception forever.
A Launch Marred by Poor Performance
What makes Cyberpunk 2077’s launch particularly noteworthy, and perhaps its entry into the Museum of Failure, is its unprecedented move of being delayed even after declaring ‘Gold’ status. The game, birthed by CD Projekt RED, launched with poor performance and an avalanche of bugs.
These issues were so significant that the game was removed from the PlayStation Store for an extended period, becoming a hot topic for internet memes and mockery.

While visiting the Museum of Failure, Reddit user P4aul1023 came across the representation of Cyberpunk 2077 amidst a collection of other significant mishaps in gaming history. One notable failure exhibited alongside Cyberpunk 2077 is Atari’s E.T., infamous for being so terrible that unsold copies ended up buried in a desert.
A commemorative poster at the museum narrates the story of Cyberpunk 2077’s downfall: “Regrettably, the massive hype led to immense disappointment. The game was nowhere near as spectacular as anticipated.
It was littered with bugs and glitches, like trees intruding on the floors of buildings, tanks plummeting from the sky, and pantless characters whimsically riding motorcycles on one foot.” The poster cheekily adds, “To be fair, we wouldn’t be surprised if the latter ends up being the norm in 2077, given the trajectory of our world.”
Cyberpunk 2077’s Unique Stand
Despite recent underwhelming launches such as The Last of Us Part 1 on PC, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Redfall, none have been able to rival the hype, disappointment, and subsequent fallout of the Cyberpunk 2077 saga.
The game’s presence in the Museum of Failure serves as a sobering reminder of the distance between anticipation and reality, forever etched in the annals of gaming history.
