In a recent blog post, Sony unveiled its latest lineup of monthly PlayStation Plus games, which includes offerings like the sandbox playground Saints Row and the 1980s mecha co-op shooter Generation Zero.
However, there was more to the announcement than just the games. Adam Michel, Sony’s Director of Content Acquisition and Operations, shared the news that starting September 6, the prices for PlayStation Plus 12-month subscriptions will see an adjustment across all tiers. This development follows a similar move by Microsoft, which increased prices for its Game Pass subscriptions a couple of months ago.
The updated subscription prices will take effect on September 6. According to Adam Michel, this change will provide Sony the means to “continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits” to PlayStation Plus subscribers.
For those who already have a multi-month subscription, the new prices won’t impact them until their next renewal date occurring after November 6. Any modifications to the subscription plan after September 6 will be subject to the new pricing. This means that there’s a brief window for subscribers to extend their membership at the current pricing level.
Revised Pricing Tiers: Understanding the Costs
With these adjustments, PlayStation Plus subscription prices will be as follows: $80 per year for the Essential tier (formerly $60), $135 per year for the Extra tier (up from $100), and $160 per year for the Premium tier (previously $120). Notably, these prices remain lower than the Game Pass offerings from Microsoft.
However, it’s important to highlight that Microsoft provides access to its first-party games, such as the upcoming Starfield, on the day of their release through Game Pass. Among PlayStation Plus plans, only the Premium tier boasts a substantial game library that can be likened to Game Pass.
Turning the spotlight to the games featured in this announcement, it’s worth noting that they haven’t garnered widespread critical acclaim. Generation Zero, which debuted in spring 2019, faced technical challenges and an environment that lacked depth.
The reboot of Saints Row received unfavorable reviews, with one review describing it as “an open-world mess beyond redemption.” As for Black Desert, an MMORPG from 2016, it has received decent but not overly compelling reviews. Despite this, millions of players have given it a try, highlighting the diversity of tastes within the gaming community.
