In an unexpected announcement, EA and Criterion Games have revealed plans to continue live service support for Need for Speed Unbound through a second year of post-launch content updates. This extended roadmap comes as the Need for Speed franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2023.
While Criterion admitted upfront it can’t deliver every piece of content fans may want currently, the studio views this second year as an opportunity to collaborate with the community and help define the future vision for the iconic racing series. Four new content volumes are planned, each bringing fresh modes, events, two fully-customizable cars, and more.
By keeping Unbound active and gathering player feedback, Criterion aims to build towards the “ultimate Need for Speed experience in one place.” As veterans of the franchise look to the future, this experimental live service approach allows the devs to test ideas and react to feedback in real-time.
The announcement indicates that EA is taking a patient, community-focused approach to steering Need for Speed’s future direction. After mixed reception for Unbound’s bold new animated art style, it seems they are wary of rushing into a new numbered sequel without properly evaluating what fans respond to best.
While certainly unorthodox, this listener-first methodology could pay dividends. Few racing franchises can claim the lineage and nostalgia of Need for Speed, which has spanned 30 years of gaming innovation.
With care and collaboration, Criterion may just craft a worthy new chapter. But they can’t do it alone – fans must make their voices heard to push Need for Speed back into the pole position of racing games. The open road awaits.
