Hollywood actor Russell Crowe is set to take on a leading role in a new martial arts movie that will feature the global sports organization One Championship. Titled “The Beast in Me,” the film tells the story of a former mixed martial arts fighter who comes out of retirement after a family tragedy. Crowe will play the role of the fighter’s trainer helping him regain his footing inside the ring.
The movie centers around Daniel MacPherson’s character deciding to compete again under One Championship banner. This occurs after the death of his brother affects him deeply. Crowe takes on the part of the veteran coach aiding the fighter’s redemption and quest for revenge against unknown opponents. One Championship agreed to let the production use its athletes and events to make the fight scenes as realistic as possible. The company’s leader Chatri Sityodtong stated their excitement “to partner with such a talented cast and crew to showcase the grit, perseverance, and heart of martial arts.”
Filming is scheduled between late 2022 and early 2025 across locations like Bangkok, Thailand. One key scene will happen live during One Championship’s Friday Fights on January 24, 2025 at Bangkok’s Impact Arena. Crowe himself plans to be in Thailand that day as part of the shoot, returning after a past visit with actor Peter Farrelly for their movie “The Greatest Beer Run Ever.”
The movie is a collaboration between Broken Open Pictures and Solution Entertainment Group. Tyler Atkins directs from a screenplay co-written by Crowe and David Frigero. Frigero, Tim O’Hair, and John Schwarz will produce alongside Atkins. Frigero said One Championship’s resources allow them to “deliver an exhilarating experience that truly captures the martial arts spirit.”
Blending Hollywood stars with real MMA gives this film a fresh edge compared to past sports films. One Championship’s input promises to make fight scenes as exciting and realistic as possible. With its appealing cast and authentic depiction of the fight world, “The Beast in Me” looks primed to captivate both movie and MMA fans when it hits theaters.
