The cast of HBO’s critically praised television series Insecure is supporting by hosting a free screening of the new comedy film One of Them Days for people in Los Angeles impacted by the current wildfires. The event, which will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. at AMC The Grove 14, will give those going through tough times “a moment of levity.”
At least 25 people have died as a result of the wildfires, and more than 105,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Los Angeles County. The film’s premiere in Hollywood, set for January 13, was canceled due to the crisis. This led the cast to create a community-focused event.
Yvonne Orji, an important member of the Insecure cast, wrote in a popular social media post, “We know the city is hurtin’, so we got y’all!” A fellow cast member, Jay Ellis, shared her viewpoint and told people affected to “enjoy a laugh with us.” Other stars from Insecure, like Natasha Rothwell, Kendrick Sampson, and showrunner Prentice Penny, have also expressed their support for the event.
One of Them Days stars Keke Palmer and SZA as roommates, as well as Dreux and Alyssa. They struggle to pay their rent after Alyssa’s boyfriend spends all their money. This film is the first movie for director Lawrence Lamont and screenwriter Syreeta Singleton.
Issa Rae, who created Insecure and produces One of Them Days, praised the cast on Instagram. She shared Orji’s post with the caption, “My @insecurehbo family!” My community forever! Thank you! Rae shared her excitement for the film, describing it as something people can relax and enjoy. She also said it is similar to popular comedies from the ’90s and 2000s. She said making the film was “tough, but a lot of fun.”
The screening fits with Rae’s overall plan for the movie. “This film is about community, and I’m thankful for my own,” she said. Rae is dedicated to helping communities and has focused on this throughout her work. She began with her web series, Awkward Black Girl, which inspired Insecure. The series, which received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, had five popular seasons from 2016 to 2021.
This project reflects the enduring spirit of solidarity that Rae and her team have fostered on and off-screen by providing joy during a difficult time.
