With his new film, “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi,” director James Mangold intends to change Star Wars storytelling. This new Star Wars movie will take place 25,000 years before any other movie in the series. It will explore the Force’s old roots. Mangold wants to write a new story different from what has been told for decades.
Mangold recently discussed his ideas for the project, which was first mentioned at the London Star Wars Celebration in 2023. The 2012 comic book series that examines the origins of the Jedi Order inspired the film. Since his teenage years, he has been fascinated by this opportunity, which he called a creative “playground.”
Mangold told MovieWeb, “The freedom to make something new is the most important thing.” And he doesn’t want to get “handcuffed by so much lore” that would make the story “almost immovable.” This method fits with what Mangold has done with other big franchises. In a 2023 interview with Variety about “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” he said that too much fan service was “antithetical” to real storytelling.
Beau Willimon, who started in April, is also writing on the project. The film differs from other Star Wars movies because Willimon, nominated for an Emmy for his work on “Andor,” gives it a real, character-driven view.
Mangold wants “Dawn of the Jedi” to have parts that remind people of Biblical epics like “The Ten Commandments.” He wants to discover how people understood and used the Force in its early stages. This is a big change from recent Star Wars content, which has mostly stuck to the series’ established mythology.
Mangold has voiced worries about universe-building and interconnected storytelling despite his success with franchise films like Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he said that making a world with multiple movies was “the enemy of storytelling,” stressing that he preferred to focus on individual film stories.
“Dawn of the Jedi” is still in the plot development stage, and no date has been set for its release. Someone said, “We’ll see what happens.”
