Alicia Silverstone says plans for a new Clueless series are moving ahead with her return as Cher Horowitz and a mandate to protect the film’s legacy, describing the project as early stage and aimed at capturing what fans loved while adding a contemporary perspective. The series is in development for Peacock, with Silverstone also serving as an executive producer as the 1995 film marks its 30th anniversary.
Writing duties are set with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage alongside Jordan Weiss, and the original film’s writer-director Amy Heckerling is on board as an executive producer, joined by Robert Lawrence and Silverstone. No production timetable or additional casting has been revealed. Silverstone recently reiterated on a morning-show appearance that the team is in “baby” phases and intends to “honor” the original while bringing something new.
Discussing how Cher might read in 2025, Silverstone suggested the character would feel “evolved,” nodding to sustainable and vegan fashion, and emphasized she had long resisted a revival unless it could be done carefully. She added that the goal is not to “mess up” what audiences cherish, signaling a cautious approach to tone, style, and character growth.
The new series is separate from a past attempt to build a Dionne-led version that did not proceed, and follows earlier expansions of the property, including a 1996 television sitcom. The revival arrives as the film continues to draw new viewers across generations, a durability that the creative team cites as both an opportunity and a responsibility as development continues.
