Willem Dafoe will travel to Sarajevo on August 15 to accept the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo, the highest distinction of the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival, which runs through August 22 in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital city. Established amid the siege of 1995, the event has evolved into Southeast Europe’s largest film showcase, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each August.
Festival director Jovan Marjanović said Dafoe’s return “after 25 years” is a privilege, praising the actor’s capacity to create “complex, emotional, and unforgettable” characters across blockbuster and independent cinema. Organizers added that the four-time Oscar nominee will lead a public masterclass for emerging filmmakers during the eight-day program. Opening-night plans also include the world premiere of Bosnian director Dino Mustafić’s dark comedy The Pavilion.
Dafoe’s résumé spans more than 150 titles and Academy Award nominations for Platoon, Shadow of the Vampire, The Florida Project, and At Eternity’s Gate. He recently completed Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake and is attached to the folkloric thriller Werwulf followed by Eggers’ take on A Christmas Carol.
The Honorary Heart, introduced in 2005, has honored figures ranging from Robert De Niro and Isabelle Huppert to last year’s recipient Meg Ryan, reflecting the festival’s increasing international pull. Marjanović said the accolade acknowledges Dafoe’s “adventurous spirit” and signals the festival’s commitment to bridging global cinema with local audiences three decades after the war-time founding.
