Sydney Sweeney has addressed the uproar around her American Eagle campaign for the first time, saying the debate “didn’t affect me” and calling Donald Trump’s public praise of the ad “surreal.” In a newly published interview, the actor said the reaction caught her off guard: “I did a jean ad… I love jeans. All I wear are jeans.” She added that she largely missed the online storm while working long days on set.
The campaign, launched in late July under the line “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” drew criticism for a wordplay on “jeans/genes” that some viewers said evoked eugenics and narrow beauty ideals. American Eagle responded on August 1, asserting that the slogan “is and always was about the jeans… Her jeans. Her story,” and pledging to celebrate how everyone wears its denim “with confidence, their way.”
Political attention amplified the controversy. After voter records circulated showing Sweeney is registered as a Republican in Florida, Trump hailed the spot as the “hottest ad ever,” later cheering that the jeans were “flying off the shelves.” Sweeney said she wasn’t tracking the discourse at the time. The brand’s visibility spiked as the debate unfolded, with market watchers noting share swings amid the publicity.
Sweeney’s remarks arrive months after the campaign’s rollout and after the company’s public defense. Supporters argue the outcry inflated a simple denim pun, while critics maintain that the ad’s language and imagery landed awkwardly in a polarized moment. In her interview, Sweeney indicated she would speak out directly when she has an issue she wants to address, but otherwise prefers to keep her focus on the work.
