Jacob Elordi and Michael B. Jordan became first-time Oscar nominees on Jan. 22 as the Academy revealed the nominees for the 98th Academy Awards. Actor Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman announced the list from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, with the ceremony set for March 15 at the Dolby Theatre and hosted by Conan O’Brien.
Jordan received a Best Actor nomination for “Sinners,” Ryan Coogler’s blues-soaked vampire epic that led all films with 16 nominations, the most ever for a single title at the Oscars. The film landed in Best Picture and earned nominations for Coogler in directing and screenplay, plus supporting acting nods for Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku. Jordan said his first call went to his mother and described “a lot of tears” after the news broke, crediting her for putting him on the path to acting.
Elordi entered the Best Supporting Actor race for Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” another Best Picture nominee that scored nine nominations. “I am so excited,” Elordi told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m 28 years old. It’s wind in the sails.” His nomination places him alongside Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro (“One Battle After Another”), Stellan Skarsgård (“Sentimental Value”) and Lindo (“Sinners”), a lineup that mixes veterans with new arrivals.
Other first-time nominees add to that shift. Elle Fanning earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” part of a category that also includes Teyana Taylor for “One Battle After Another,” plus Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Amy Madigan and Mosaku. Fanning wrote on social media, “I can’t catch my breath,” calling it “an honor” to have her first nomination tied to a film about family and moviemaking.
The Best Actor race now pairs Jordan with Timothée Chalamet (“Marty Supreme”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”) and Wagner Moura (“The Secret Agent”). Final voting runs Feb. 26 through March 5, the Academy said.
