Amanda Seyfried Says She Didn’t Know She Had a Producer Credit on The Housemaid

Her story about discovering an executive producer title mid-production comes as Lionsgate ramps up a sequel and industry groups keep tightening how credits are defined.

Amanda Seyfried says she learned she carried an executive producer credit on The Housemaid only after production had already started, an anecdote that has reignited a familiar Hollywood question: what, exactly, does that credit signal when a star insists they did none of the producing work?

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, Seyfried recalled spotting “executive producer” next to her name on a call sheet about three weeks into filming. “I didn’t sign up for that,” she said, adding that she later contacted producer Todd Lieberman and was told her agent had negotiated the credit. Seyfried framed it as a “vanity” label, saying she “only acted” and did not want audiences confusing her credit with the kind of hands-on development work she attributed to other producer-actors.

The comments arrive as The Housemaid continues to post blockbuster numbers for a mid-budget thriller. Lionsgate has pointed to box office momentum and loud audience chatter online as key drivers behind its quick decision to move forward with The Housemaid’s Secret, based on the second book in Freida McFadden’s series. The studio said it plans to start production later this year and is developing the sequel with the aim of bringing back director Paul Feig and star Sydney Sweeney, with Rebecca Sonnenshine again writing.

Seyfried’s candid description of an agent-negotiated producer title also lands during a period of heightened sensitivity around screen credits. The Producers Guild of America has published detailed guidance distinguishing primary “Produced By” work from other producer labels, describing executive producer credit as tied to essential contributions such as early advocacy, rights or financing—while also warning that mere financing, vendors, or late-stage participation should not qualify.

Seyfried, for her part, has still signaled interest in returning to the franchise in some capacity, saying earlier this year that she “guarantee[s]” a sequel will happen and that she would like to make a small cameo.
