The filmmakers behind Netflix’s Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model say the docuseries would have moved ahead even if Tyra Banks declined to sit for interviews, pushing back on the idea that her participation shaped the project’s direction.
Directors Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan said they built the series around contestants and other key figures first, then approached Banks for her account of how the long-running competition was made and why certain on-camera moments escalated. “This documentary was happening, regardless,” Loushy said, adding that Banks’ decision to talk “gave the opportunity” to hear her story directly rather than through secondhand descriptions.
Their comments come as the three-part series, released Feb. 16, revisits the show’s most contested material: extreme makeovers, harsh critiques tied to body image, racially insensitive shoots, and allegations that production prioritized story beats over contestant welfare. The directors have said Banks did not receive editorial control and did not view the finished episodes before release, a structure meant to reassure participants that the series would not function as a controlled rebuttal.
Banks’ interview, the filmmakers say, covered a wide range of topics, including the culture that rewarded viral humiliation in early reality TV. One area remained sensitive: her relationship with former creative director and judge Jay Manuel. In one exchange, Banks shut down questions about him, a moment the filmmakers kept in the final cut; Sivan described her refusal as a candid indication of lingering pain rather than a rehearsed talking point.
The series has already triggered new rounds of reporting and responses. In recent days, Banks issued an apology to former contestant Keenyah Hill, saying Hill “deserved more” protection after Hill described a cycle 4 shoot in which she felt sexually harassed and unsupported. Separately, former insiders have reiterated claims that storytelling sometimes drove judging decisions, including allegations that producers selected weaker photos to steer eliminations.
