Jason Momoa has dropped out of Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions’ live-action adaptation of Helldivers, leaving the studio’s biggest video game film project without a lead actor less than four months after his casting was announced. No reason for the departure has been given by either party.
Momoa was first attached to the project in February, after The Hollywood Reporter confirmed his casting. The film, directed by Justin Lin and scripted by Gary Dauberman, adapts the 2015 game and its sequel, which have collectively sold more than 12 million units. Sony is currently searching for a new star, though the project remains very much alive with a planned theatrical release of November 10, 2027.
Lin has previously directed The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, and F9: The Fast Saga, making him a veteran of established IP with a track record in large-scale action franchises. The game’s premise translates naturally to that sensibility: it centers on an elite unit of soldiers — the Helldivers — who must battle alien creatures threatening to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth.
Momoa’s exit is a significant blow, though some industry observers have pointed to his overcrowded schedule as a possible factor. Between Supergirl, Street Fighter, and Dune: Part Three, he has three major films releasing in what remains of 2026, and is currently in production on A Minecraft Movie: Squared, the sequel to the $961 million-grossing original in which he starred. That sequel is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027, just months before Helldivers was due to open.
The replacement search’s timeline could put pressure on the planned 2027 release date, given the scope and sci-fi scale of the story. Sony’s track record in this space offers some confidence: its 2022 collaboration with PlayStation on Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, grossed $407 million worldwide, while Peacock’s Twisted Metal series and HBO’s The Last of Us also emerged from the Sony-PlayStation partnership.
Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner are producing.
