Hulu has canceled “Love Overboard,” the yacht-set dating series executive produced by “Call Her Daddy” host Alex Cooper, after a single nine-episode season. Page Six first reported the decision on August 31, with Disney confirming the show will not return. An insider told the outlet the series simply “wasn’t finding an audience.”
The show marked Cooper’s first move into unscripted television and premiered March 26 on Hulu. Hosted by “Bachelorette” and “The Traitors” alum Gabby Windey, it placed 22 contestants aboard a luxury yacht where they competed for romantic connections and for access to the boat’s high-end amenities.
Gia Aldisert and Tim Demirjian won the season and a $100,000 trip around the world. Despite an active social media rollout at launch, the series never approached the cultural footprint of other Hulu unscripted hits such as “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” “The Kardashians,” or “Vanderpump Villa.”
“Love Overboard” was produced by Cooper’s Unwell Productions alongside Jeff Jenkins Productions, 3BMG, and Walt Disney Television Alternative. Cooper executive produced with her husband and business partner Matt Kaplan and Unwell’s Mina Lefevre, joined by Jeff Jenkins, Russell Jay-Staglik, and Jason Ehrlich from Jeff Jenkins Productions, and Ross Weintraub and Reinout Oerlemans from 3BMG.
The cancellation lands during a bumpy stretch for Cooper’s broader Unwell business. Her beverage line, Unwell Beverage Co., is winding down production after less than two years on shelves. Still, her television ambitions show no sign of slowing. Unwell recently launched the dating game show “Let’s Marry Harry” with Harry Jowsey on Netflix, and the company is preparing “Unwell Summer Games” for YouTube on September 7, following an earlier “Winter Games” installment.
Cooper also has a scripted project in development at Hulu, “You Deserve to Know,” starring “Vampire Diaries” alums Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley, indicating the streamer’s relationship with her production company remains intact despite the reality show’s failure to launch a second season.
