Enthusiasts of the popular video game Minecraft want the upcoming film version to look more like its source material. A teaser trailer for the planned 2025 movie revealed a live-action style that disappointed some fans.
In response, an independent 3D artist captured the game’s iconic blocky aesthetic in an animated trailer remake. This new version attracted widespread praise on social media and calls to animate the entire movie.
The live-action trailer from Warner Bros. Discovery departed significantly from Minecraft’s visuals. Many expressed concern it failed to represent the game’s diverse fan base.

“Minecraft has one of the strongest fanbases, but the studio’s teaser simply did not align with what viewers wanted,” said one source. In contrast, the animated recreation struck a familiar tone through its accurate colors and shapes.
Dissatisfaction with the live-action approach stems in part from how remarkably successful the video game has become. Minecraft attracts players of all ages who have supported it for over a decade.

But some felt the trailer aimed mainly at younger kids instead of this broad demographic. The 3D artist’s clip highlighted what fans connected to in the blocky visual style which evokes minecraft’s distinctive look.
Will the studio reconsider fans’ feedback as the release nears? History provides precedent. A similar backlash emerged prior to the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, leading developers to redesign the title character based on input. With the Minecraft community eagerly awaiting a movie honoring the game, Warner Bros. Discovery will be watched closely in how it proceeds.
