Netflix has set October 16 for the return of The Diplomat and released a new teaser that picks up directly after last season’s shock ending, with Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler navigating the upheaval that follows Grace Penn’s sudden elevation to the presidency. The streamer also confirmed Bradley Whitford has joined the cast as First Gentleman Todd Penn alongside Allison Janney, Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn and Ato Essandoh.
Early footage frames a Washington–London chess match in which loyalties and leverage shift by the hour. Series creator Debora Cahn says the new run “flips the chessboard,” calling it the “particular nightmare” of getting what Kate wants, only to discover its costs. Whitford, reuniting on screen with Janney, praised the writing and ensemble in remarks released with the teaser.
The third season will span eight episodes debuting the same day, with first-look images previewing confrontations in the White House and across the Atlantic. Production wrapped in London and New York, continuing the show’s mix of location shooting and recreated corridors of power.
Storywise, the new episodes unfold in the immediate aftermath of Season 2’s finale. Kate has accused then–Vice President Grace Penn of orchestrating a covert attack and acknowledged her own ambition for the vice presidency. Minutes later, President Rayburn dies after learning of Penn’s role, leaving Kate to reckon with a new commander in chief, a husband whose actions may have precipitated the crisis, and a First Gentleman whose presence complicates already fraught alliances.
The latest teaser follows an earlier campaign that first signaled a fall 2025 return and introduced Whitford’s character; Monday’s date announcement locks the premiere on Netflix’s calendar as the service doubles down on the political thriller. The company has already committed to a fourth season, underscoring its confidence in a series that blends turbocharged diplomacy with a marriage under strain.
