Zach Cregger says a prequel centered on Aunt Gladys is moving ahead in development, confirming that he has been talking with Warner Bros. about returning to the breakout character from his 2025 horror film Weapons. In a recent interview, he underscored that the idea predates the movie’s success and that he already has a story in mind: “It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit.”
The project would explore the origins of Gladys, played in Weapons by Amy Madigan, whose unnerving command of dark ritual power became the film’s most talked-about element. Trade coverage indicates studio discussions are underway about building a spin-off around the character; specific deal points, casting, and schedule have not been announced.
Madigan, who kept her role under wraps before release, has spoken about the character’s inspirations and said she is open to returning, while acknowledging that nothing is guaranteed until a production is formally set. Her performance—mixing menace with mordant humor—helped fuel audience fascination and awards speculation, strengthening the case for a dedicated origin story.
Weapons, released by Warner Bros. in August, has been a rare midsummer horror hit, with reported global grosses above $250 million on a mid-range budget. The ensemble includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, and Cary Christopher, but it was Madigan’s Gladys who emerged as the signature figure, prompting chatter about untold history trimmed from the film and now a candidate for feature expansion.
Cregger’s near-term commitments could shape the timeline. He has been linked to a new Resident Evil feature, and he recently suggested a long-gestating DC spec is unlikely to fit current franchise plans, hinting that bandwidth and studio priorities will determine when a Gladys film might roll. For now, the filmmaker is publicly signaling intent—and confidence that the character can sustain a story of her own.
