The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild handed top film honors to One Battle After Another, Sinners and Frankenstein at its 13th annual awards ceremony on Feb. 14 in Los Angeles, a craft-focused event that has become a regular stop on the late-season awards calendar.
In feature categories, One Battle After Another won for contemporary make-up and contemporary hair styling, while Sinners took period/character make-up and period/character hair styling. Frankenstein won special make-up prosthetics, recognizing the teams behind transformation-heavy work that often defines the Academy’s make-up and hairstyling conversation.
Television winners ranged from The Studio and Palm Royale in limited-series categories to Stranger Things for special make-up prosthetics. Saturday Night Live picked up multiple wins, and Dancing with the Stars won contemporary hair styling in the live-program field. Skeleton Crew won in children and teen categories. Outside scripted TV, the guild awarded Abracadabra for make-up and Walmart’s “WhoKnewVille” holiday campaign for hair styling, while live-theater honors went to The Monkey King (California regional) and a stage production of Frankenstein (Broadway/international).
The guild said the ceremony played to a sold-out crowd of more than 850 and streamed worldwide, with Rachael Harris hosting and Frankie Grande leading a red-carpet pre-show. In a pre-event statement, guild president Julie Socash said Harris’ “charm and humor” would “make for an unforgettable evening.” A quip from the stage captured the night’s tone: “No one believes in love at first sight… it’s love after hair and makeup!”
Career honors accompanied the competitive awards, with Amy Madigan receiving the Distinguished Artisan Award, Michael Johnston taking the Vanguard Award, and Greg Nelson and Judy Alexander Cory recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
