Baldur’s Gate 3, the highly anticipated fantasy role-playing game, garnered widespread attention and soared up the ranks on the Steam top-sellers list after an intriguing reveal during the recent Panel From Hell livestream.

The highlight of the showcase? The revelation that players can engage in a romantic encounter with a Druid in bear form. Clips of this unexpected cutscene quickly went viral on social media, generating considerable buzz and even prompting TikTok to abruptly halt the livestream halfway through.

Introducing Halsin: The Druid in Bear Form

The fascinating character at the center of this controversy is Halsin, an NPC (non-playable character) and potential companion who can be rescued from a prison. Halsin possesses the ability to temporarily transform into a bear, and if players make the right choices, this transformation occurs during a romance cutscene.

The resulting scene has elicited various reactions, but Larian boss Swen Vincke, in an interview with IGN, described it as “hilarious” and highlighted the humor in the unconventional encounter.

The impact of the bear sex scene on the popularity of Baldur’s Gate 3 became evident as the game rapidly ascended the Steam top-sellers list, based on revenue. At the time of publication, the game had climbed an impressive 21 places to claim the fourth spot, surpassing titles such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

While the attention-grabbing bear sex scene contributed to the game’s success, Vincke emphasized that it wasn’t the sole factor driving Baldur’s Gate 3’s surge in popularity. He attributed the game’s rise to the overall success of the Panel From Hell livestream, along with positive impressions from journalists and creators who had hands-on experiences with the game at a press event.

Vincke expressed his gratitude to the audience and attendees, highlighting their enthusiasm and the rewarding feeling it brought to the team. He emphasized the depth and variety of Baldur’s Gate 3, which can be challenging to showcase fully but has garnered fantastic responses. Vincke revealed that the team has dedicated extensive effort to crafting a game that offers rich gameplay and a wealth of discoveries for players to enjoy.

A Vast Adventure Awaits

Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by the makers of the Divinity: Original Sin series, offers an expansive open-ended experience rooted in the world of Dungeons & Dragons.

The game’s PC release date was moved forward from August 31 to August 3 to avoid overlapping with Bethesda’s highly anticipated Starfield in early September. While the PlayStation 5 version will be slightly delayed until September 6, there is no release window yet for the Xbox Series X and S versions.

According to Vincke, a standard playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3 takes approximately 75 to 100 hours, but players seeking to explore every facet of the game should expect that time to double. As fans eagerly anticipate the forthcoming release, the depth and immersive nature of Baldur’s Gate 3 promise to captivate players in an unforgettable adventure through the realms of fantasy.
