Disney’s recent choice to remove a transgender character’s plot from Pixar’s upcoming animated series “Win or Lose” has stirred up controversy. Since the series, which centers on a middle school softball team, will now portray the character Kai as cisgender, former Pixar employees have expressed their disapproval of the move. This change stands out because the character’s voice is done by transgender actor Chanel Stewart.
People are paying more attention to how Disney portrays LGBTQ+ people, which led to its decision. The company told The Hollywood Reporter that the change was necessary because “many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their terms and timeline.”
Former Pixar staff members are very upset about the change. Sarah Ligatich, who used to work as an assistant editor on the episode, was upset about the choice. A long time ago, Disney wasn’t making great material as a business. Ligatich said, “They have been in the business of making a lot of money.”
This change carries a lot of emotional weight, especially for Stewart, who now has to play a cisgender character. Logitech said that the talks between executive producer David Lally and Stewart broke his heart. The actress has publicly said that she is disappointed with how the character has changed.
Former employees who saw a preview of the original episode praised it for its sensitive treatment of transgender issues. An unnamed staff member said the episode was “beautiful” and could “literally save lives” by helping people who feel alone.
This case shows how Disney and Pixar are changing dramatically. Pete Docter became chief creative officer in 2018 and has stressed making “the most relatable films possible,” which some see as a move away from stories with underrepresented characters.
Critics have also pointed out that Disney’s content rules are unclear. The company’s animated movies often deal with adult topics like death and drug use in well-known movies like “Bambi” and “Pinocchio.”
The change in “Win or Lose” is consistent with other recent Disney choices, such as the cancellation of an episode of the animated series “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” that featured a transgender character. Some former employees think these decisions are made for political reasons, especially since Disney just paid $15 million to settle a defamation lawsuit involving President-elect Trump.
After being pushed back several times, “Win or Lose,” with Will Forte as the coach’s voice, will come out in February 2025. While work is still being done, some former Pixar staff members are looking for new possibilities. For example, they may start their animation studio to highlight voices that are not often heard.
