Ike Turner Jr., a Grammy-winning producer and the son of Tina Turner and Ike Turner, died Saturday in Los Angeles at 67, according to family and media reports. A cousin said his health had declined in recent years; multiple outlets reported kidney failure as the cause. The death came one day after his birthday on Oct. 3.
Born Izear Turner Jr. in 1958 to Ike Turner Sr. and Lorraine Taylor, he was adopted by Tina Turner after her 1962 marriage to his father and grew up around the duo’s touring band and studio life. As an adult he worked across engineering and production roles, including periods assisting Tina’s live sound and contributing at Bolic Sound, before turning to his own projects as a multi-instrumentalist and producer. He won a Grammy in 2007 for producing Ike Turner Sr.’s album “Risin’ With the Blues.”
Relatives and local outlets said Turner Jr. had experienced cardiac complications and a recent stroke in the weeks leading up to his hospitalization. His cousin Jacqueline Bullock shared that he “was more than a cousin… a brother,” reflecting on their shared upbringing, while noting his long-running health issues.
News of his death arrives amid a period of losses for the extended family. Tina Turner died in 2023 at 83; Ike Turner Sr. died in 2007. Turner Jr.’s half-brothers Craig and Ronnie also predeceased him, in 2018 and 2022 respectively. Coverage of his career has pointed to a life shaped by early exposure to show business and complicated family dynamics, but grounded in steady behind-the-scenes craft across recording and live sound.
