Netflix has promoted Elizabeth Stone to a newly created role that combines oversight of product and technology, a move that consolidates leadership over the streamer’s product, engineering and data groups at a moment when platform features, advertising tools and live programming increasingly intersect.
Stone, who became the company’s first chief technology officer in 2023, will now serve as chief product and technology officer, according to an internal announcement reported Tuesday and reflected on the company’s investor-relations leadership biography. Greg Peters said in the note that Stone was the “clear choice” to lead the combined organization as Netflix pursues major priorities across the business.
The promotion formalizes an arrangement that began last fall after Eunice Kim departed as chief product officer. At the time, Netflix said Stone would oversee product responsibilities while the company searched for a replacement. Rather than filling that vacancy with a separate executive, Netflix has now folded product leadership into Stone’s portfolio.
The expanded remit lands as Netflix leans harder on features that demand tight coordination between user experience design and core infrastructure: ad-supported plans, live events, and games, alongside ongoing interface changes meant to keep viewers watching longer and returning more often. In a prior statement about the product organization’s direction, Netflix leadership tied recent app work to supporting “live events, ads, and games” inside the same experience.
Management experts often describe the combined product-and-tech model as a way to speed decisions and reduce friction between roadmaps. Executive search firm Egon Zehnder has noted that a single leader can align priorities across product management and engineering, while cautioning that the structure depends heavily on company needs and leader capacity. Separate analysis of the dual-role trend has flagged the tradeoff: faster execution can come with heavier workload and fewer internal checks between product demand and technical risk.
